Chemo # 25 -- August 26, 2008

Makenna and Bridger's first day of school--August 25, 2008.

Makenna in her 4th grade classroom--she has Mrs. Chitwood. Bridger in his 2nd grade classroom. He has Mrs. Sinton.
Sawyer enjoyed decorating his poster while waiting to be called back. Hunter made one as well.

Hunter would not look at me for this picture. He sure enjoyed the train table.

Chemo # 25 -- August 26, 2008 -- Continued...

Movie time!
Cute boys!
Sawyer loves this TV in the infusion room.
Spoiled Johnston boys...TV is a treat for them.
Receiving chemo #25...I had to keep talking to Sawyer to keep his mind off of the treatment. I usually hold him when he gets his chemo so I think he was a little unsure about everything. Sure helped having the TV and a bag of Doritos.

Chemo # 25 -- August 26, 2008 -- Continued...

Watching TV & eating Doritos while getting chemo...
Hunter and Sawyer loved playing in the cupboards in Danielle's hospital room. Thankfully, they kept themselves occupied with these cupboards and a rolling chair.
Before we left the hospital Sawyer just had to sit on this horse. Notice the green foam he's holding. This is the craft project he made at the clinic. He wanted to give it to Mrs. Hollandsworth. He handed it to her on the way into her hospital room, but on the way out he took it back. Funny kid.
On top off our long day...Sawyer did not/would not take a nap. He always falls asleep on the way home from his treatments-not today. He was such a tired beast the rest of the afternoon. He finally crashed on the couch armrest at 8:30 p.m. when we were finishing up reading books. Oh, he also insisted on wearing these winter PJ's. Crazy kid.

August 24, 2008 --We've had a busy weekend!

Our little Power Ranger--On Saturday the kids and I stopped in a party store to look at all the Halloween things. We love Halloween! Well, they had several Power Ranger costumes on clearance. They only had one small size--Sawyer's favorite color--the green Power Ranger so I had to get it. (An x-small would have been a better fit but they didn't have any.) Needless to say, Sawyer was thrilled and couldn't wait to put on his costume. He wore the mask on our last two errands and jumped in the rest of his costume as soon as we got home. Today I asked him if he wanted to wear the mask to his Tuesday's doctor appoitment, he immediately replied, "No more pokes." Saturday we also hit the "Build & Grow" workshop at Lowe's. The kids enjoyed making their trucks and ended up repainting them when we got home. They're looking forward to the upcoming pirate ship "Build & Grow".
Friday night the kids participated in a talent show at our church. The talent show participants were ages 3-11. Makenna and Bridger both played the piano--Makenna a solo and then Bridger did a duet with me. (Makenna's wearing a 3 cornered hat in this picture for another talent she shared--that of memorization. She rattled off all 43 presidents in order. I've never been able to do that.)
For Makenna's last talent she shared her acting experiences--the Mount Vernon movie and then her upcoming "We the People,"movie which will be shown at the Smithsonian this fall. She shared a clip from the Mount Vernon movie. She also brought all of her pictures from the latest set and shared some sketches from her experiences.

Bridger talked about his artwork--Pirate crayon drawing and water-color self-portrait. He also showed everyone the "gold" medal he won for freestyle at the division swim team finals.
Hunter brought a collection of his swords and was going to do a sword fighting demonstration but he chickened out. It was a fun evening and I was so proud of my children. Poor Sawyer kept asking me when it was his turn to do something. He kept saying, "My turn. My turn." I should have just asked if he could have had a turn. He wanted to sing, "I am a Child of God." He does such a good job of singing it on his own. He got over the "My turn" worries, though, as soon as he saw the refreshments.

Can you believe it's been a year?! Our Sawyer a year ago--August 2007

This picture was taking during our visit to New Mexico to see Papa and Grandma--June 2007. We visited them for a month. It was during this visit that Kori noticed the lump behind Sawyer's left ear. Papa and Grandma have a couple of fireplaces in their house and Sawyer loved getting into this one. Thankfully, we caught him before he got on the carpet.
We were encouraged to have Sawyer's picture taken professionally before he started treatment. The photographer at The Picture People really had a great photo session with Sawyer and decided to display one of his pictures.
Eating some candy in the playroom at the hospital--August 22, 2007. Sawyer loved this playroom and it was our salvation during our hospital stay. We'd sometimes visit it at 2 a.m.

Notice how the lump pushed Sawyer's ear out. This picture is really gross because after Sawyer's biopsy, the necrotic tissue and other fluid started working it's way outside of the biopsy site. It was really quite disgusting. 8-22-07 Here's Sawyer right after his first port surgery. Just a few minutes after this picture was taken, Sawyer was given his very first chemo treatment. 8-25-07

Can you believe it's been a year?! Our Sawyer now--August 15, 2008

Helping Daddy mow the grass--8-8-08
Enjoying some cake at Bridger's 7th birthday party--8-9-08
Sawyer sure loves his guys...especially Power Rangers. He was excited to receive these new guys in the mail.
Sawyer insisted that the new Power Rangers had to be standing up. He got so frustrated when one of them would fall.
Silly boy...Sawyer got into Terry's gel today (August 15) and decided to do his own hair. He sure was generous with the gel.

MRI -- August 13, 2008

Sawyer's 27 month old bear picture--August 8, 2008.
Such a happy child at 5:45 a.m. We just arrived at the hospital for Sawyer's MRI. The radiology reception area wasn't open yet. Sawyer was so excited to see the escalators. When he saw them, he exclaimed, "Mommy, go up, up, up, down."
Sawyer in the radiology reception area. He's playing with some monster stickers.
Notice the smiles are gone...Sawyer's not too excited to be in this MRI waiting area. He knows the mask is to come.

Family Vacation to Myrtle Beach--August 2008

The Johnston Four ready to head to the beach early Monday (Aug. 4) morning. They were up at 6:30 a.m. but Terry and I made them wait till 8 a.m. to head to the beach.

Sawyer loved playing in the sand. Sawyer was fascinated with the rise and fall of the waves. He would giggle and giggle. He was so excited about everything. I loved seeing the joy on his face.
The kids and I had so much fun building sand castles. Here's our sand castle from the first day.

Our cute Sawyer.

Family Vacation continued...

Terry and the boys looking for shells and other treasures.
During one of our afternoon excursions we visited Ripley's Aquarium. The kids enjoyed the pirate exhibit and touching the sting rays and horseshoe crabs.
Makenna was stung by a jellyfish one day and had to have a picture taken with these aquarium jellyfish. She's pointing to the arm that was stung.
Bridger's last beach picture. This is the view from our room.
The unhappy Johnston 4 who do not want to leave the beach.

Chemo #24 -- Aug. 1, 2008

Waiting in the procedure room. Sawyer looks so sad.
Watching a movie.
Mr. Grumpy...but hey, he has a right to be.
Using Ms. Julie's purse as a pillow.

Chemo #24--continued...Aug. 1, 2008

Sawyer thought this gave him Power Ranger power.
Getting ready for the doctor to give him some medicine to ease the pain. If you look behind his right leg, you can see the spot where the emla cream was put. That biopsy was taken from this area.
Sawyer home and holding his new Power Rangers.

Above, you can see where the biopsy was taken. Sawyer's eczema actually looks good in this picture. It has been a lot worse. Below: Hunter's excited to hold one of Sawyer's new Power Rangers. (Hunter's wearing Power Ranger PJ's. These guys are like two peas in a pod.)
